A condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough of the male hormone testosterone that plays a key role in men’s health.
Hypogonadism is a common condition in the male population, with a higher prevalence in older, obese men and men with type 2 diabetes. It is estimated that approximately 35% of men older than 45 yrs of age and 30-50% of men with obesity or type 2 diabetes have hypogonadism.
Hypogonadism can present with numerous symptoms including a decrease in sexual drive (libido), erectile dysfunction, lowered sperm count, breast enlargement, reduced energy, reduced muscle mass, increased irritability, inability to concentrate and depressed mood. Given the numerous causes it is essential that men get evaluated and have a customized treatment plan made. The evaluation will consist of a telemedicine visit, laboratory testing, and subsequent recommendations for the best treatment plan.
Testosterone replacement therapy is safe and can be effective for men who are diagnosed with consistently abnormal low testosterone production and symptoms associated with this hormone deficiency. There are many different types of testosterone therapy. It is important to have a customized approach in the treatment so that treatment is based on the cause of low testosterone, patient preferences, cost, tolerance, and concern about fertility.
